Facebook Celebrates 10 Years

The Giant social networking website Facebook celebrates its 10th birthday on February 4. In celebration, we’ve rounded up 10 of the site’s vital statistics.                     

 

Tuesday, February 4, 2013, marks the 10^th anniversary of the biggest social networking website in the world, Facebook. That’s right, we’ve been poking, liking, sharing and generally staying better connected for a decade now.

From a university directory formulated in a Harvard dormitory by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes, to a billion-dollar business, Facebook has become a way of life for its users, altering the way we use the internet and conduct relationships - whether we like it or not.

 

According to recent calculations, Facebook currently has 1.23 billion monthly active users – that’s approximately one-sixth of the world’s population. If the site was a country, it would be the second largest in the world behind China (1.36 billion) and India (1.239 billion). That’s bigger than the next four populations - US, Indonesia, Brazil, Pakistan and Nigeria - combined.

 

A closer look at that Facebook population and you’ll see that the US has the biggest share of the market in terms of users. Studies by research company eMarketer discovered the place of the site’s birth has approximately 146.8 million users, as of December 2013, followed by India (84.9 million), Brazil (61.2 million) and Indonesia (60.5 million). That said, according to official Facebook reports, 81 percent of daily active users come from outside of North America.

 

However, despite the US’s winning market share, it’s those users in Singapore who are most active. According to a 2011 study by data monitoring and analysis firm Experian, users in Singapore spend the longest periods of time on the site, with an average visit lasting 38 minutes and 46 seconds. That’s a whole 18 minutes longer its US counterparts.

 

Mobile

Increasingly, a wealth of Facebook users are accessing their profiles via mobile devices, with some 945 million using phones to log on each month. With the rise in the number of users active on their mobiles and the improvement in smartphone camera technology, photo sharing has becoming one of the most popular features of Facebook. Indeed, each day more than 300 million images are uploaded to the site.
